Studying the current situation of waste generation and collection from aluminium cans in Bac Tu Liem district, Hanoi

Abstract

This study applies the method of determining the generation coefficient combined with sociological investigation and field survey to study the current situation of generation and collection of waste from aluminium cans. The research result showed that aluminium cans account for about 1% of the total domestic waste of households. The aluminium cans generation rate (kg/person/day) in the study area is 0.0012 kg/person/day. With the 2021 population of Bac Tu Liem district being 340,605 people, the volume of aluminium can waste calculated is 408.726 kg/day. The results of the survey investigation process showed that the amount of waste generated during the procurement and recycling process is mostly unregulated. The problem of aluminium cans waste has not been fully managed and solved. Local authorities still do not have specific regulations on the management of aluminum can waste, and funding for organising related activities is also limited. Most people are aware of the responsibility to classify aluminium cans waste (80%), but they have not fully and thoroughly implemented it. 77% of people interviewed said that the current garbage collection has ensured environmental hygiene. The percentage of people who think that recycling aluminium cans helps protect the environment accounts for 94%. Regarding the readiness to participate in local aluminium cans waste reduction activities, the number of people who agreed to participate accounted for 70%. The willingness of people to buy products made from recycled aluminium is 94%.
