Abstract

Streptococcus suis infections usually results in severse complications such as pneumoniae, meningitis, septicemia… Tetracycline and erythromycin are two antimicrobials that are extensively used for therapy and prophylaxis of S. suis strains isolated from pigs and human beings. This study aimed at detection of resistant genes for erythromycin and tetracycline from S. suis strains causing human infections. 81 S. suis isolates (72 tetracycline-resistant and 9 tetracycline-susceptible), and 33 isolates (28 erythromycin-resistant and 5 susceptible (CLSI 2013) were selected for the study. PCR was used to detect some resistant genes for erythromycin and tetracycline. No S. suis isolate harboured erm(A), mef(A/E), msr(D); only one harboured erm(B). 62 isolates harboured tet(M), and 81 for tet(K), 6 for tet(L), 13 for tet(W) and 19 for tet(40) respectively. No tet(O) and tet(S) gene was detected.
