Plus tree selection of Myrica esculenta Buch.-Ham.ex D.Don with the goal of fruit in Van Don district, Quang Ninh province

Plus tree selection is one of the important steps in forest tree breeding. In this study, 18 cultivation models of Myrica esculenta in Van Don district were randomly selected and assessed between the ages of 5 and 28 years old. The study results showed that the Myrica esculenta planting models had significantly different overall average growth in terms of diameter, height, canopy diameter, canopy length, and fruit yield. Based on the assessment of fruit yield criteria and growth indicators, as well as the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) to determine the weight for each criterion, 21 plus trees were selected from 63 candidate trees. The selected plus trees exceed the mean of the forest stand in terms of diameter (9.3-83.5%), tree height (6.0-34.8%), canopy diameter (13.3-66.7%), canopy length (7.4-50.7%), fruit yield (18.2-103.8%), and average rating (exceeds 18-68%), depending on each age. These plus trees have origins, provenance, and good quality to serve the work of field testing and forest tree breeding to supply localities.
