Plus-trees selection of Cinnamomum balansae H.Lec for intense planting to supply timber in Lao Cai province

Abstract

According to the criteria in TCVN 8755:2017 (Forestry tree varieties - plus trees) and tree trunk quality indicators, 12 plus trees of Cinnamomum balansae H.Lec (C. Balansae H.Lec) were selected in natural forest in Bao Thang and Si Ma Cai districts, Lao Cai province. 10 plus trees were selected in Phong Nien, Thai Nien, Ban Phiet communes, Bao Thang district and 2 plus trees were selected in San Chai commune, Si Ma Cai district. Selected C. Balansae H.Lec plus trees have good growth with a diameter at breast height from 20.4-55.7 cm, a total height from 14.6-28.0 m, under branches height from 7.5-15.7 m (accounting for 51.4-66.0% of the total height) and all have good quality with a total quality score according to the criteria of trunk straightness, branch smallness, canopy development and health, scored 17-20 points. The Forest Protection Department has approved the addition of trees in Lao Cai province. This is a good source of breed to propagate and produce seedlings to multiply and create high-quality C. Balansae H.Lec varieties for afforestation to provide large timber combined with essential oil extraction in Lao Cai province.
