Single port laparoscopic surgery in rectal cancer treatment: experience of Hue central hospital

The study’s objective is to assess the results of single port laparoscopic surgery (SPLS) and experiences from this procedure’s applications for rectal cancer treatment. 15 rectal cancer patients (high, middle and low rectum) underwent SPLS with anterior resection, low anterior resection, Pull through procedure or abdominoperineal resection (Miles procedure) from 1.2013 to 9.2015. The results showed that, the average age was 63.2±11.4 years old (45-82) with the male/ female ratio 1.1/1, preoperative CEA increased 40.0%, and the average tumor size 3.4±1.9 cm (1- 7.5). Methods of SPLS included anterior resection 13.3%, low anterior resection 26.7%, Pull through procedure 6.7%, and Miles procedure 53.3%. Time of surgery 241.0±46.8 minutes, length of incision 2.7±1.3 cm (2-6), hospital stay of 8.6±3.6 days (6-15), duration of follow-up after surgery 17.3±2.6 months (5-30). Conclusion: single port laparoscopic surgery in rectal cancer treatment is safe, feasible, and can solve every position of rectal cancer and be also in accordance with the development trend of minimally invasive surgery in the world.
