Abstract

Van Yen, a mountainous district of Yen Bai province, is often affected by natural disasters, especially heavy rain causing landslides. Van Yen’s complex topographic conditions as well as erratic weather conditions facilitate landslides when heavy rain occurs. This article uses the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) methodology integrated into ArcGIS software to develop the risk maps for Van Yen district, Yen Bai province. The results show that the area at high risk of landslides is very large and accounts for 21% of the total area of the district, concentrating in the communes of Phong Du Thuong, Mo Vang, Dai Son, Na Hau, Lang Thip, Lam Giang, An Binh, Quang Minh, Vien Son, Xuan Tam, and Ngoi A. The research results can be used for planning, preventing and minimizing damages caused by landslides in Van Yen district.
