E-government maturity and corruption in the digital era: The moderating effects of digital economy

Abstract

E-government is considered a tool to improve transparency and openness in the public sector and fight against corruption. Therefore, understanding the relationship between the level of E-government development and the level of corruption will allow for more effective utilisation of related projects in anti-corruption efforts. This study examines the impact of the level of E-government development on the level of corruption in the context of the digital economy. The results show that the high level of the E-government Development Index (EGDI) has a negative impact on the Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI), increased Internet usage may amplify the impact of the E-government Development Index (EGDI) on the CPI, but at the same time, it may reduce the positive impact of the E-Participation Index (EPI). Based on these findings, the research suggests some ways to influence the level of corruption by stimulating specific aspects of E-government development. This is particularly important in the digital era, where E-government is gaining popularity among the citizens.
