The paper introduces a theoretical model that allows the prediction of rock mass failure-time of geo-hazards in the construction of underground structures based on the modelling of rock mass with rheological model expressing the elastic-viscous plastic behaviors. The rock mass failure-time of geo-hazards in tunneling is defined as the time at which the rock mass or the ground around the underground excavation changes from the the viscous-elastic state to the elastic-viscousplastic state. The critical displacement at the failure state corresponds to the proposed stability criteria in SNIP-II-94-80 of Russia as well as the stability ranking system of rock mass surrounding a large-scale underground excavation according to IAEG 2006. The results of the study show the suitability for the observed results in practice and the actual rule in underground construction. This also confirms the need to pay attention to the rheological model and the pratical rules of simulation and prediction.
