Current status of generation, classification, and public participation in domestic solid waste classification at selected apartment buildings in Hanoi

Abstract

The article assesses the current status of generation, classification, awareness, and participation of people in the sorting of domestic solid waste generated from households living in apartment buildings in Hanoi. Based on the analysis, the study proposes solutions to improve the efficiency of domestic solid waste management in the study area. The results show that the coefficients of domestic solid waste generation at Dream Town and Vinhomes Smart City apartment complexes are 0.72 and 1.15 kg/capita/day, respectively. The main composition of domestic solid waste generated in both complexes is food waste (from 48 to 51%). At Dream Town, residents mainly classified domestic solid waste into two types, including inorganic solid waste and organic solid waste. At Vinhomes Smart City apartment building, residents classified it into three categories, namely food waste, recyclable waste and remaining solid waste according to the 2020 Law on Environmental Protection of Vietnam. Residents of both Dream Town and Vinhomes Smart City apartment complexes show their willingness to participate in the separation of domestic solid waste at source with corresponding rates of 84 and 90%. According to Pretty’s participation scale, the majority of residents are willing to participate at the incentive level (level 4).
