The impact of basic research funding on the quality of postgraduate training in Vietnam

Abstract

This study assesses the impact of funding from the National Foundation for Science and Technology Development (NAFOSTED) on the quality of postgraduate training in Vietnam, approached through the framework of higher and postgraduate education learning outcomes, including three key dimensions: knowledge, skills, and the development of learners’ academic competence. Survey data were collected from 345 postgraduate students who participated in basic research projects funded by NAFOSTED during the 2009–2023 period. Employing an Embedded Mixed-Methods approach, the results of multiple linear regression analysis reveal a positive and statistically significant impact of participation in NAFOSTED-funded projects on the aforementioned outcome-based factors. More than 90% of respondents acknowledged the substantial role of NAFOSTED funding in improving the quality of theses/dissertations and overall postgraduate education in Vietnam. The study confirms a causal relationship between funding resources and training quality outcomes, providing empirical evidence to inform policy recommendations aimed at strengthening NAFOSTED’s role in supporting postgraduate education and developing a high-quality scientific workforce in Vietnam.
