Constructing a historical figure: To Hien Thanh in written sources

Abstract

This article reconstructs the historical figure of To Hien Thanh, a leading statesman of twelfth-century Dai Viet, based on a comprehensive corpus of written sources. These include dynastic histories, chronicles, religious texts, inscriptions, and epigraphic materials dating from the twelfth to the nineteenth centuries. Through systematic comparison and critical source analysis, the study reassesses the historical evidence concerning his career and highlights his central role in governance, military affairs, and the maintenance of state stability under the Ly Dynasty, particularly during the political transition from Ly Anh Tong to Ly Cao Tong. It also examines how successive generations of historians and compilers represented his life and achievements, revealing both continuity and reinterpretation in the historical tradition. The article emphasises the evidentiary value of contemporaneous and nearcontemporaneous sources for reconstructing historical realities, while treating later texts as supplementary and interpretive materials. Across the longue durée of historiography, To Hien Thanh is consistently portrayed as an exemplary figure of talent, loyal service, and moral integrity, resulting in an enduring legacy that has shaped Vietnamese historical memory for more than eight centuries.
