Abstract

This article applies a dialectical evolution method for concepts and systems to analyse digital transformation in transport as a system-transition process, rather than merely as technology selection or infrastructure investment. The method views transport as a system H(t) comprising the superstructure, infrastructure, labour and production forces, flows, functions and whole-system quality (Q). Based on secondary-document analysis and two Vietnamese mini-cases, the article proposes an operational sequence including concept evolution, dominantcontradiction identification, target quality (Q*), positive/negative development opportunities and risks (d+/d−), transition-level selection, sandbox design, key performance indicators (KPIs), rollback and reverse updating. Its main contribution is to add a structured operational layer to existing frameworks such as sustainable urban mobility plan (SUMP), intelligent transport systems (ITS), mobility as a service (MaaS) and transport digital twins, linking system contradictions with transition levels, verification mechanisms and implementation conditions. The two mini-cases illustrate how the method can be applied with publicly available data; they do not constitute independent empirical validation.
