Results of adaptation rearing for Landrace, Yorkshire and Duroc varieties imported from France, USA and Canada

Abstract

This study was conducted in Kyson Pig Nuclear Herd Development and Research Station belonging to Thuy Phuong Pig Research Center, National Institute of Animal Sciences from September 2015 to October 2016 in order to evaluate the results of adaptation rearing with 90 pigs imported from France (Landrace: 40 sows and 5 boars; Yorkshire: 40 sows and 5 boars), 140 pigs imported from the US (60 sows and 10 boars of Landrace breed; 60 sows and 10 boars of Yorkshire breed), and 60 Duroc pigs imported from Canada (50 sows and 10 boars). The initial research results showed that Landrace, Yorkshire, and Duroc pigs imported from France, US, and Canada have adapted in Vietnam with the proper growth and reproduction. The average body weight gain in the period of from 40 kg to 100 kg of Canada Duroc breed was 953.96 g/day, followed by the American Landrace, French Landrace, French Yorkshire breeds, and the lowest was the American Yorkshire (868.07 g/day). The initial estrus age of Yorkshire and Landrace breeds imported from France (177.74 and 172.93 days) was earlier than that imported from America (200.63 and 213.25 days); Duroc imported from Canada had the initial estrus age of 188.96 days, earlier than that of Landrace and Yorkshire imported from America but later than Landrace and Yorkshire imported from France. Landrace and Yorkshire breeds imported from France and America had high potential reproduction; the number of newborn piglets in the first parity was from 11.90 to 15.36. The body weight gain of Canadian Duroc breed was high, but the number of newborn piglets in the first parity was low, about 9.87 piglets/litter. The number of survival newborns of Landrace and Yorkshire breeds was from 10.17 to 13.42 piglets/litter, while that of Duroc breed reached 7.84 piglets/litter. The number of weaned piglets of Yorkshire imported from France was highest with 12.32 piglets/litter; the number of weaned piglets of French Landrace, American Landrace, and American Yorkshire varied from 9.36 to 9.66 piglets/litter; and that of Duroc was lowest with 7.0 piglets/litter. The survival body weight was from 1.43 to 1.56 kg/piglet, weaned weight was from 6.41 to 6.76 kg/piglet.
