Abstract

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is one of the leading causes of nosocomial infections. P. aeruginosa widely resists to antibiotic classes by many mechanisms, such as overexpression of efflux pump systems, low outer membrane permeability (OM), or producing β-lactamase to degrade β-lactam antibiotics. Multi-drug resistant P. aeruginosa strains cause many difficulties in the treatment of diseases. This study aimed to investigate antibiotic resistance characteristics and genotype correlation of P. aeruginosa isolated from clinical specimens (such as bronchial fluids, sputum, urine, etc.) at Viet Duc Hospital from 2012 to 2014. Seventy strains were tested for antibiotic susceptibility. PFGE was used to analyse the genotype correlation. Results showed that P. aeruginosa highly resisted to antibiotics: ceftazidime (85.7%), aztreonam (81.4%), imipenem (97.1%), amikacin (27.1%), gentamicin (87.1%) and ciprofloxacin (87.2%). The results also showed P. aeruginosa had a variety of genotypes, divided into 11 groups with the homology >80%. Most strains in a same genotype group were isolated from bronchial fluid specimens and at intensive care unit.
