Abstract

The aim of this study is to investigate why fruit-tree growers are not likely to adopt Vietnamese Good Agricultural Practices (VietGAP) standards in Hau Giang province. Secondary data were collected from the yearly report of the Hau Giang agricultural sector, while primary data were gathered by the household survey through face-to-face interviews. The qualitative approach and descriptive statistics were primarily used in the study. Results showed major causes, such as high production cost, the relatively low farm-gate price for VietGAP products, and an uncertain market for VietGAP products, which trigger fruit tree growers to be less motivated to adopt VietGAP standards in practice. Besides, complex components of techniques and writing farming diaries may also cause farmers to be unwilling to apply VietGAP standards. Accordingly, local authorities regarding the agricultural sector should place emphasis on training to raise farmers’ awareness and knowledge of VietGAP and enhance the connection between VietGAP adopters and outlet markets.
